Christchurch holiday information
Christchurch is known as the city of churches and is one of the prettiest cities on the South Island of New Zealand. It is by far the largest city on the South island and is the center of commerce as well as being the base for almost every tourist that visits here. Christchurch has an international airport with direct flights from Australia and the Pacific as well as from many other destinations within New Zealand. Nearly all tourists entering the South Island for a holiday will do so through Christchurch airport. For this reason Christchurch is base camp for nearly all of the organized tours that take tourists around to visit the islands places of interest. It is also the base for the major campervan and motor home rental and hire companies that operate on the South Island. They all have their depots within a close proximity of the airport to arrange for convenient briefings and pick ups for their clients.
Christchurch is also the base for skiing in the central ski fields in the South Island. Mount Hutt is the largest of these and there are several others along the alpine road through Arthurs Pass. The Tranz Alpine Rail link to Greymouth also departs from Christchurch on its spectacular journey across the alpine link to the west coast. Train buffs from around the world come here to experience this fantastic journey. None of the ski fields here have on snow accommodation so they all stay in Christchurch accommodation. Because of this huge demand from tourists of all descriptions, Christchurch has a large and varied accommodation base.
You can choose to stay in virtually any level of accommodation you want. Backpacker hostels, serviced apartments and hotels of all descriptions and standards are available. Most is located close to the city center so it is probably going to be walking distance from restaurants, cafés and local attractions like museums, galleries and historical sites and buildings. There is also a great resort range and places like Clearwater resort have a fantastic golf course where you can play. It is home to the New Zealand PGA event each year.
There are also plenty of day tours on offer from Christchurch. Hanmer Springs, Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook National Park are all within easy reach as are a number of great coastal destinations like Kaikoura to the north and Timaru to the south.
